Does a healthy house feel far off to you? Or does it feel way out of your budget? A healthy house might feel a little confusing — what IS it and what does it mean for MY home?
Although the term “healthy house” can mean SO many different things, it boils down to a home that has fewer toxins than the average home and a home that promotes healing and promotes wellness rather than burdening our bodies down.
In contrast, a home with poor indoor air quality, high levels of moisture and more toxins from harmful ingredients and materials will start to take its toll on the health and wellness of those who live there.
Afterall, we spend upwards of 80% of our time in our homes – more than anywhere else in the world. And what this means is that our homes have the power to be a place that our bodies can heal and flourish in. A healthy home is a place that can help your body detoxify and be a safe space for your body to heal each and every day.
If you’re looking to round out 2024 with a big change or you’re looking to start 2025 out on the right foot, these four areas are some of the spaces that I shared with you this past year, and they’re each an excellent starting spot for creating your own healthy house.
Creating a Toxin Free Bedroom:
Bedrooms are the most visited place in your house. And because it’s the space we usually sleep in, it’s one of the most important spaces inside any healthy house. Our bodies need to repair and detox overnight, leaving our bedrooms as a perfect place to ditch toxins sooner than later.
This last year we covered so much about bedrooms and HOW to make them healthier with just a few simple steps. These posts are filled with healthy habits and toxin free products you can begin to swap out inside your bedroom:
Home Maintenance:
Let’s not forget about taking care of your healthy house. One of the BEST ways to create a healthier space is reducing the RISK of moisture, mold and failing systems. But even in a healthy house, it can be one of the last ways we look to care for our space.
Home maintenance doesn’t have to be hard or feel confusing. All you need to know are the areas to check on a regular basis and the items you need to do to maintain that area.
And know your limitations! You don’t have to do everything yourself in your healthy house. Sometimes we have to call in the professionals. And that is okay. You can learn a lot from contractors and technicians that come into your space to help you with repairs and maintenance.
These posts are some of the more specific healthy home maintenance areas that I covered in 2024 that can be a big help to you as you maintain your healthy house:
Toxin Free Kitchen:
After the bedroom, the kitchen is the next most visited room of any healthy house. PLUS, because we consume so much with items in our kitchen, we open up another route of exposure for toxins. Ingesting toxins in the kitchen is actually a HUGE source of body burden, and so many of us are unaware of what exact items we should be watching for and removing.
A healthy house MUST have an equally healthy kitchen. Luckily it’s more about the small items that we use on a day to day basis and less about some of the bigger items like our fridge or dishwasher.
It makes creating a healthy kitchen much easier budget wise and timewise. This last year I covered some really specific ways you can start creating a healthy kitchen inside your healthy house through planning ahead and product swaps.
Creating the Perfect Indoor Climate for a Healthy House:
A healthy house is a space that should not only be free from as many toxins as possible, but a space that also FEELS good and has a healthy climate.
So often we focus on just the items in our house and we totally forget to start looking at the feel and climate inside our space. Oftentimes the climate inside our home is just a combination of habits we need to start and stop inside our healthy house.
Whether your going to finish 2024 strong with some added habits to reduce humidity and raise your indoor air quality, or maybe you’re already planning ahead to 2025, I had some really specific posts this year that will help you establish the routines and habits you need for a healthy house.
Planning Ahead to Create a Healthy House:
Coming up in January, I’ll be teaching three classes all about creating your own healthy house and the steps you need to take to successfully plan it out. One of the biggest mistakes I see families making is over-complicating the whole process of reducing toxins in their space. They either over research, or get bogged down with all the information out there.
With an overwhelming amount of information out there on what toxins to reduce inside your home, many people start to get analysis paralysis. They spend more time thinking about the toxins in their space and what route they should take rather than taking action.
One thing I know for sure, and one thing I teach all of my families: imperfect action and small action is better than no action at all.
In other words, even making small changes, or imperfect changes that might be temporary are better than letting your space be filled with unnecessary toxins.
And while you might think you’ve got a pretty good handle on getting toxins out of your house, I promise that you will learn new things, new methods and get bigger ideas on how to simply and cost effectively create a healthier living space for you and your family.
