It seems like everyday there is new information about health problems caused by toxic ingredients in our home and health products. If you’re like me, you’re still surprised to find out the sheer number of toxins we allow into our homes every day in these items we use. Every time I see a new study on an product I use either every day or multiple times a day, I know that THIS is the next thing on my list of things to clean up and remove from my everyday life.
There’s an importance in changing something that is used multiple times throughout the course of a day. These are the items that are affecting our bodies in a real way. Using a product over and over means your body never gets a break from it. The toxins continue to build up within our systems, causing symptoms of underlying health problems.
But what if we gave our bodies a break from these toxins and began to heal? Our bodies are amazing in the sense they begin to heal. They will begin to become more sensitive to the toxins we’ve been desensitized to in the first place. You’ll begin to know when you’ve been exposed to something that isn’t natural and healthy for your body.
We all know what it’s like to feel burdened down by something in our lives, and it’s a very restrictive, unhealthy feeling. By reducing the amount of toxins in our daily routine, you can begin to be unburdened. You begin feel free and light — how God created us.

Creating a healthy home isn’t something that happens overnight—it’s the result of intentional, everyday choices that support wellness and reduce toxins. If you’re already trying to make better choices for your health, your daily routine is a powerful place to start.
As a healthy home expert and Building Biology Practitioner, I help families just like yours take simple, sustainable steps toward creating a healthier living space. And the best part? You don’t need to overhaul your life—you just need to make consistent, thoughtful changes each day.
Let’s explore some easy additions and swaps you can make as part of your daily routine to reduce toxins and create a healthy, wellness-focused home.
Morning: Set the Tone for a Low-Toxin Day
1. Open Your Windows for Fresh Air
Start the day by ventilating your space—even 5–10 minutes of fresh air each morning can reduce indoor pollutants and improve air quality. It helps remove carbon dioxide buildup and airborne VOCs (volatile organic compounds) that may have accumulated overnight.
2. Hydrate with Filtered Water
Skip tap water first thing in the morning and instead drink from a high-quality water filter (reverse osmosis or Clearly Filtered pitchers are a great start). This reduces your exposure to chlorine, PFAS, and heavy metals commonly found in municipal water. (My filter post will help you decide what’s right for your family)
3. Use Non-Toxic Skincare & Personal Products
Your skin absorbs what you put on it. Use EWG-verified or third-party certified non-toxic products to avoid harmful chemicals like parabens, phthalates, and synthetic fragrances. Morning routines often involve multiple exposures—from face wash to moisturizer to deodorant. If you missed my post all about HOW to cross reference your products on clean databases, this will help you choose the BEST products for what you need that are also healthy

Midday: Healthy Home Habits That Stick
4. Prep Food in Safe Cookware
When making lunch or snacks, avoid nonstick or aluminum cookware, which can leach toxins into your food. Instead, opt for stainless steel, cast iron, or glass cookware and food storage containers.

5. Reduce EMF Exposure
As you’re working from home or using digital devices, give yourself regular screen breaks and unplug devices when not in use. Consider using EMF-reducing tools or creating a low-EMF workspace if you’re particularly sensitive.
The best advice is to distance yourself from electronics whenever you can to give your body the break it needs. This post will walk you through using electronics in a healthier way at home.
6. Clean with Non-Toxic Products
If you tidy or clean during the day, use non-toxic cleaning products or simple DIY mixes (like vinegar + castile soap + essential oils). This helps reduce chemical exposure from conventional cleaning sprays, which often contain respiratory irritants and hormone disruptors. Although my personal favorite is EWG Verified Aspen Clean Concentrate for just about every application in my home.

Evening: Wind Down with Wellness
7. Power Down Early
Lowering blue light exposure 1–2 hours before bed supports melatonin production and sleep quality. Turn off screens, dim lights, and opt for amber lightbulbs or salt lamps in the evening to create a calmer, toxin-free sleep environment.
8. Air Purifying Houseplants
Consider keeping a few air-purifying houseplants in your bedroom and main living spaces. They can naturally remove VOCs and support cleaner indoor air while enhancing the calming, natural feel of your space. Curious about which houseplant is best for each room of your home? I answer all your questions in this post.
9. Bathe Without Chlorine
Shower or bathe using a chlorine-filtering showerhead. Chlorine vapors are easily inhaled and absorbed through the skin, especially with hot water. Reducing chlorine exposure in your evening routine can support skin and respiratory health.
Evening & Sleep Sanctuary Routines
10. Detox Your Bedroom
- Open windows once more (or all night)
- Remove visible dust
- Move phones out of your room
- Create a dark environment
- Run HVAC fan
Follow my full plan for creating a sleep sanctuary here.
11. Run an Air Purifier at Night
An air purifier with a HEPA and activated carbon filter can run while you sleep to continually remove allergens, dust, and airborne toxins. This is especially important if you live in an area with high outdoor pollution or seasonal allergens. You can see my breakdown of high quality air purifiers in this post.
- Cut the Wi-Fi
RF waves from Wi-FI in your home will not only disrupt your sleep, but can put your body under an enormous amount of stress. A huge improvement to your space would be to cut wi-fi for at least the bedtime hours when you won’t be using it to give your body the break it needs to heal and restore without sleep interruptions.

Weekend or Weekly Habits to Add to Your Daily Routine
13. Deep Clean with Purpose
Use your weekend cleaning routine as a chance to dust, vacuum with a HEPA filter, and wash linens. Focus on areas that accumulate dust and toxins—under beds, couch cushions, air vents, and baseboards.
14. Get Out of Your Healthy Space
Even if you have the HEALTHIEST space, God didn’t design our bodies to be indoors, away from nature as much as they are in today’s communities. Make an intentional plan to get outside, into nature and ground yourself. This practice can help your body begin to regulate more naturally and in turn detox the way it was intended.
15. Detox One Small Space
Use my Room By Room Detox and pick a room, space or closet to detox. This practice will help you keep tabs on your home, take care of maintenance that’s been a bit deferred and get rid of toxic items or products. It’s the best way to maintain a healthy home.

Creating a healthy, toxin-free home doesn’t have to be overwhelming. It’s about building mindful habits into your daily routine—opening the windows, filtering your water, choosing cleaner products, and creating a restful space that supports your well-being.
If you’re unsure where to start or want a personalized plan for your home, I offer 1-on-1 consultations to guide you through the process with simple, science-backed steps tailored to your space and needs.
You don’t have to do this alone. Let’s work together to make your home a haven for wellness.

This is super helpful, so thank you for sharing. I’ll be pinning it so that I can look back to it!
Thank you, Krysten 🙂 I’m glad it was helpful!
This is something I’ve been working towards. Each time I have to replace something I do my best to research it and replace with a toxin free version. It’s not been easy but it’s made a huge difference in my cleaning
That’s exactly what I do too, Angela. I love having a plan of what I’m going to introduce to my home that is safe. 🙂
We are working towards a plastic free, toxin free home. I have already cut almost all packaged foods from our pantry, and we are using oils for more things throughout the house.
I am trying to be as natural as I can be, especially with food, as processed foods makes me sick.
That’s how I am too — I’m definitely more sensitive now that I’ve cut out processed foods.
Lots of useful information here. Every little change adds up to help us be healthier.
Thank you, LoLo!
Some really great points. I too try to avoid sugars and processed meats. Every little bit of research helps make decisions for me. Thanks for sharing.
That’s great! You’re welcome 🙂
I love these tips! We’ve been trying to switch to as many non toxic products as possible
I have tried for the past year to get a 100% non toxic home and I’m still working on it! It truly is worth switching to!
It can definitely be a long process. But I find the smaller bites I take of creating a healthy house, the more likely the habits are to stick.
This is something I’m trying to stay conscious of in my house. I always try to get toxin free products, especially cleaning products. Great tips on how to achieve a toxin free home. I’ll pin this for later!
I’m still in the process and it can be hard. I feel like the better products are more expensive. But enjoying learning more tips to do just that.
I think sometimes they are, but sometimes it may be a product that lasts longer, and so it really ends up even in the end. 🙂
I am all for getting rid of that processed GARBAGE in people’s houses!!!! That stuff (IMO) truly is toxic!
I’m all for that too! Real and whole food is so much tastier anyways. 🙂
What a wonderful reminder to be more aware of what’s in the products we surround ourselves with. I think it’s imprtant to take steps to move towards a cleaner routine.
You’re so right, Christa!
This is some really great advice. We have begun to be more mindful about what we put into our bodies lately.
love the post so much information, really helpful, I always try to use as much as I can Toxin free products on my daily routine and triying to share with my family as well.
There are some very good points and tips here. I am always up for getting rid of any chemicals in the home xx
Thanks, Melanie. I’m glad it was helpful!
Such great information! Thanks so much for sharing!
